October 24, 2018Printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids in the world by volume. I purchased this printer on sale for about $80, because I have a mid-end Brother laser printer which I purchased in the early 2000's (when laser printers were still quite expensive and unheard of) and the thing is STILL running strong. This inkjet, has had one of everything when you hear about troubled inkjet printers. There is software on the thing which obvious makes the printer not recognize ink after about 2 weeks. I don't care if they deny it or not, I have done empirical experiments, and it's clear - the thing wants me to go out and buy ink. And I know what Brother would say - buy the name brand ink which is marked up by about 300% and it won't happen. Well, it's just not right. I would consider keeping the thing as a scanner only. Scanner has worked without a problem this whole time. But it's the printer part (you know, the part this product is NAMED after.. It's a Brother PRINTER after all...) which really grinds my gears. The fact that I am unable to print a black and white document while the color cartridges are uninstalled (or really, installed but the printer is trying to get me to buy more ink) is just ridiculous. Don't let printer manufacturers tell you that they use blue ink in the when the printer prints back, to make the black "higher quality". How could mixing a color into pure black ink cause anything other than discoloration from true black? It's pure common sense. So what, should you save a buck and get this printer? Probably. Unless you're willing to spend $$$ on a high end printer that doesn't actually have made-to-break features built in, this may actually be the best price to performance printer on the market. I mean, it's slow as anything, so you may just want to keep using your local library's printer, or a staples print shop, but if you NEED printer and can't use a library or a print shop, can't pay for one that is not going to be made-to-break, don't mind fiddling quite frequently to make it take the ink, don't mind an extra loud printer, AND can have the printer me monstrously slow, then this is the one for you.
Perfect for my projects

December 3, 2016I chose this printer based on price, customer reviews, and ink cost, plus I've been printing all my black-white copies with a Brother laser printer. I'm female and setup was easy. It's fax-capable, wireless-capable, and can print from a cellphone app, but I do not use those features for now. I used a USB cable for better reliability (if my internet service hiccups, I can still print, wheee!). The location of the USB input was inside this printer, a bit weird but perhaps they were thinking if I tripped on the cord, the only damage would be to me versus the print job :)
A nice surprise during setup is the location of the ink cartridges: they are the easiest-to-access of any printer I've owned, right in front!
I do mostly matte-type color printing for cartoon-y color posters, flannelboard figures, and fancy nametags. I'm thrilled with the color quality (as compared to my Canon MG5320 that developed "terminal" issues), but since THE COLOR PRINTING IS INDEED SLOW (as all user reviews have indicated), I will have to finish printing projects sooner and begin printing them sooner in order to meet my deadlines. BLACK-WHITE PRINTING IS FASTER than the color printing by far with this printer. I like all the print job adjustments and pre-set choices built into this printer.
I print photos once a year and will see how it handles semi-gloss.
I like that I can adjust scan resolution, as I was stuck with a default setting with my previous Canon model. For higher resolution, I had to use my HP4010 slide scanner - a bit of a hassle.
Here's another "quirk:" in the middle of a job (example: ten 8x11 matte color prints) this printer pauses for a cooldown. This means I need to allow more time for print jobs in case if this occurs, which is OK with me, but perhaps not OK with someone considering to purchase this printer.
It has an ink save mode for printing that is worthless; however, the only time I need that feature is for black ink, and I do not use this printer for B/W printing.
I will revise this review if problems develop with this printer.

July 11, 2024I have had my Brother printer for years and it still works great! It has great print/copy quality. I also like that when I have a home phone line it has fax capabilities. The ink is easy to change and I just order online and it gets shipped right to my home. Best printer brand in my opinion.
