Sapolsky delivers a cogent and principled argument that pits two intuitively palatable and yet diametrically opposed positions; a) We function in a world where cause is antecedent to consequence and b)We possess freewill which we understand to operate outside determinism. Sapolsky is a brilliant communicator, effortlessly suffusing wit, science and philosophy in a treatise that can not help but challenge our understanding of the human condition and the values that inform our ethics. Brilliant!

This is the second book by Robert Sapolsky I've bought and am now reading. I wish I could take his classes--he's a fabulous writer, incredibly broad knowledge and ability to convey his scholarship in a readable and often entertaining way. Love his books.
Essential reading

A masterful survey of the empirical research on determinism with respect to human actions and behaviour. The most comprehensive book on the subject. The author is not seduced by homocentric ideologies, notably 'free will'.
