Maria Grazia Chiuri’s New Take On The Dior Lady 95.22 Bag

A lot of new has been coming out about the British royal family lately, but one positive aspect is Princess Diana, and though she passed in 1997, she is still relevant and inspiring people and design houses. Dior’s women’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri reinvented the Lady Dior bag that was later re-named the Lady Diana, for the Maison’s Cruise 2023 collection. The reinvented bag is termed: the Lady 95.22.

“An ode to the connection between past and present, this irresistible model reinvents the emblematic lines of the Lady Dior; its name echoes the year 1995, the date of the icon’s creation, and 2022, the year of this exclusive new revival,” states Dior in Maison notes. It was former Dior creative director Gianfranco Ferre that created the bag in 1995, which he named Chouchou. But after French First Lady Bernadette Chirac gave a Chouchou to Princess Diana, it was eternally renamed after her.

Encompassing the macrocannage motif, a high frequency technique, while enhanced by the cannage pattern, this new bag is done in two versions. Chiuri has created a timeless silhouette that exudes luxury craftsmanship, as the shape isn’t so square but rather rectangularly rounder. And Chiuri knows her accessories. When she joined Valentino in 1999, she was responsible for their accessories lines.

The leather for the bag is cut by hand and is worked on with wave energy. Both heat and pressure give artisans the ability to create volume for the architectural shape of the bag. Handles and a leather shoulder strap give a few different ways the bag can be carried. And the charms give a unique look and feel to the Lady 95.22.

The Lady 95.22 bag is available at certain Dior boutiques.
